Frequently Asked Questions
South Veterans Parkway will be a six-lane roadway that, when connected to the existing northern segment of Veterans Parkway, will serve as a regional arterial route around southeast Sioux Falls. This project is the final stage in connecting Interstate 29 with Interstate 90 and will allow for increased traffic flow and improved connectivity across the corridor to help meet future transportation needs, along with stimulating regional economic growth. The route will have a raised median separating two-way traffic traveling at 55 miles per hour and signalized intersections at approximately every mile. A shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists will be constructed along the south and east side of the roadway and will feature crossing options along the route.
South Veterans Parkway will connect I-29 to the previously completed Veterans Parkway, which is just north of 57th Street.
The first segment from Western Avenue to Cliff Avenue was completed in November 2024 and opened to traffic. Construction on the next segment from Cliff Avenue to Sycamore Avenue will begin in spring 2025. The remaining segments will continue to be designed and constructed through 2027. This project is funded in partnership between the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), City of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls Metropolitan Planning Organization, and Federal Highway Administration. The project will cost approximately $210 million.

As Veterans Parkway construction progresses, the City of Sioux Falls and South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) have planned roadway improvements to increase safety and promote consistency throughout the corridor. One of those includes changing the speed limit throughout Veterans Parkway to be 50 miles per hour. Crews have installed speed limit signs in completed sections, and new sections will have the same speed limit of 50 mph. See more information about planned improvements.
Motorcycle noise and street racing are not isolated to South Veterans Parkway—they are part of a broader, citywide issue that the Sioux Falls Police Department is actively working to address. Motorcycles, in particular, present enforcement challenges due to their speed and maneuverability, but they remain a priority for the department.
The Sioux Falls Police Department is aware of these concerns and has implemented targeted enforcement, including saturation patrols and increased presence in high-complaint areas. While 24/7 enforcement is not feasible with available resources, officers respond to complaints and prioritize areas with frequent issues. We also forward specific speeding reports along South Veterans Parkway to the Police Department for follow-up.
Yes. In May 2025, Sioux Falls Police and partner agencies conducted saturation patrols—issuing over 180 citations and 20+ arrests for speeding and exhibition-style driving. Speeding & racing saturation patrol leads to over 180 citations.
Additionally, state legislation passed with stronger penalties and felony-level charges for illegal street-racing behaviors & exhibitions such as burnouts and drag races. Senate passes bill toughening street racing penalties - KBHB News.
To help enthusiasts stay safe and legal, the City has also established permit programs for controlled, off street events through approved venues. Sports car racing club gets initial nod to allow events in Sioux Falls.
A comprehensive Noise Study was conducted before construction began. The study assessed current and projected noise levels and found that mitigation was not warranted. As traffic increases, the City will continue to monitor and evaluate conditions.
There are no current plans to conduct a new noise study. The findings from the existing study remain valid. However, traffic volumes and corridor conditions are continually monitored, and if future data suggests significant changes, re-evaluation may be considered.
